4 Apr. John 13:1-15

4 Apr. Jesus provides a model of humility

"It was almost time for the Jewish Passover Feast. Jesus knew that it was time for him to leave this world and go back to the Father..."

"Jesus and his followers were at the evening meal. The devil had already persuaded Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to turn against Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given him power over everything, and that he had come from God and was going back to God."

"So during the meal, Jesus stood up and took off his outer clothing. Taking a towel, he wrapped it around his waist. Then he poured water into a bowl and began to wash the followers' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him..."

"When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and sat down again. He asked, 'Do you understand what I have just done for you? You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord', and you are right, because that is what I am. If I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash each other's feet.'"

"'I did this as an example so that you should do as I have done for you.'"

          (John 13:1-15)

It's often said that 'actions speak louder than words'. These actions by Jesus say more about our need for humility when dealing with others than a thousand words would!

As they arrived for the Passover meal on the Thursday evening, Jesus acted like a humble servant, washing the dust off his disciples’ feet to welcome them and to teach them humility by his own example.

In this day and age, leaders are often lacking in humility. The proud and arrogant actions of political dictators are well known in many parts of the world, but we are not exempt from arrogant and proud political leadership in the UK and the USA, for example.

Only if we are humble enough to put other's needs (or the national interest) before our own, will we be able to do what God our heavenly Father expects of us.

Whenever you wonder what you should do in a particular situation or what decision you should make, first ask a simple question: 'What would Jesus do?' And then do it!
