11 Jan. Genesis 10:11-12,32

11 Jan. The colonisation of the ancient world

"This is the family history of Shem, Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah."

"After the flood these three men had sons. The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras. The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim and Rodanim."

"Those who lived in the lands around the Mediterranean Sea came from these sons of Japheth. All the families grew and became different nations, each nation with its own land and its own language."

"The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan. The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan."

"Cush also had a descendant named Nimrod, who became a very powerful man on earth. He was a great hunter before the LORD, which is why people say someone is 'like Nimrod, a great hunter before the LORD.' "

"At first, Nimrod's kingdom covered Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh in the land of Babylonia. From there he went to Assyria, where he built the cities of Nineveh, Rehoboth, Ir and Calah. He also built Resen, the great city between Nineveh and Calah..."

"This is the list of the families from the sons of Noah, arranged according to their nations. From these families came all the nations who spread across the earth after the flood."

          (Genesis 10:1-12 & 32)

The Book of Genesis states that the colonisation of the Aegean and Anatolia, Ethiopia and Arabia was by people of Mesopotamian descent. The kingdom of Cush (Ethiopia), for instance, was settled by people from Mesopotamia (in c.2980BC).

According to the author of Genesis, the descendants of Japheth (Indo-European peoples of the Aegean and Anatolia) included:

Gomer (Cimmerians) Madai (Medes)

Javan (Ionians) Meshech (Muski)

Ashkenaz (Scythians) Elishah (from Alasia in Cyprus)

Tarshish (from Tyre in Phoenicia)

Kittim (from Cyprus) Rodanim (from Rhodes)

The descendants of Ham (African peoples of Ethiopia and Arabia included those from:

Cush (Ethiopia) Sheba (Saba in southern Arabia)

Dedan (Northern Arabia) Mizraim (Egypt)

Ludim (Lydia) Caphtorim (Cretans)

Put (Libya)

The Semitic peoples, descended from Shem, remained in Mesopotamia and the neighbouring areas. They included those from:

Elam (South east Mesopotamia) Asshur (Assyria)

Sheba (Saba in southern Arabia) Lud (probably Lydia)

Hazzarmaueth (Hadramaut in southern Arabia)

Aram (Aramaeans)

The writer of Genesis concluded that all these nations were descended from Noah through his three sons - Japheth, Ham and Shem.

The map shows the nations of the ancient world according to the Book of Genesis.
