13 Jan. Mark 1:21-27

13 Jan. Jesus tells an evil spirit where to go!

"Jesus and his followers went to Capernaum. On the Sabbath day he went to the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught like a person who had authority, not like their teachers of the [Jewish] law."

"Just then, a man was there in the synagogue who had an evil spirit in him. He shouted, 'Jesus of Nazareth! What do you want with us? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are - God's Holy One!'"

"Jesus commanded the evil spirit, 'Be quiet! Come out of the man!' The evil spirit shook the man violently, gave a loud cry and then came out of him."

"The people were so amazed they asked each other, 'What is happening here? This man is teaching something new, and with authority."

          (Mark 1:21-27)

Have you ever felt uncomfortable meeting someone you didn't know, and feeling they positively exuded evil? If you've ever felt like this (and we have), this is the Holy Spirit in you reacting to the evil in the other person and telling you to be wary.

Have you ever looked at the face of a murderer in the newspaper or on the TV and felt that the person was controlled by evil. That's the Holy Spirit in you reacting to the evil in the other person and telling you to watch out.

Jesus spoke with authority and commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man in Capernaum. The amazing thing is that the Holy Spirit living within his followers gives us exactly the same authority over evil in other people's lives (see Luke 10:17-20).

The photo shows the remains of the 1st century synagogue in Capernaum, where Jesus cast an 'evil spirit' out of a man controlled by evil.
