7 Apr. John 14:15-26

7 Apr. Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit

"'If you love me, you will obey my commands. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you for ever - the Spirit of truth.'"

"'The world cannot accept him, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he lives with you and he will be in you.'"

"'I will not leave you all alone like orphans; I will come back to you. In a little while the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too.'"

"'On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and that you are in me, and I am in you.'"

"'Those who know my commands and obey them are the ones who love me. I will love them and will show myself to them...'"

"'If people love me, they will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Those who do not love me do not obey my teaching.'"

"'This teaching that you hear is not really mine; it is from my Father who sent me.'"

"'I have told you all these things while I am with you. But the helper will teach you everything and will cause you to remember all that I told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name.'"

          (John 14:15-26)

Jesus continued to talk with his twelve close followers during his 'Last Supper' on the night he was betrayed - the day before he was killed.

Some say his betrayal and death was a mistake; but this misses the point completely. Jesus knew exactly what was about to happen to him and said, "in a little while the world will not see me anymore."

But he also knew that he would rise again after death, and return to God the Father. The whole thing was planned (for much, much longer than we ever realise).

So Jesus said to his followers, "I will not leave you all alone like orphans." He promised to come back (on the Day of Resurrection - Easter Sunday). We can talk to him every day through prayer. And he promised that he would help them for ever - by filling them with the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit.

And this is exactly what happened. The 'world' - those who do not believe in Jesus - cannot see him and think it is all ridiculous; but those who believe in him 'see', hear and feel his presence every day. They live with him in their lives just as if he was walking hand in hand with them throughout the day.

Why not read and absorb these words of Jesus again? They are utterly profound!
